The modern term "Aromatherapy" comes from a fateful laboratory accident in 1937.
French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse invented the word after a burn incident spurned his curiosity about the healing power of essential oils. Upon burning his hand he doused it in the nearest liquid he had: lavender essential oil.
He was astounded to discover that his pain calmed immediately and he recovered without any scars!
Upon the heels of this "discovery", French surgeon Jean Valnet used essential oils to help soothe soldier's wounds in World War II, which advanced the benefits of aromatherapy.
